Ecological Education

Despite the very restricted regulation of land use in the zapovedniks, as institutions, the Russian zapovedniks are very open to the public. Ecological education is one of the most effective instruments for land preservation. All zapovedniks of the Russian Zapovednik network have been using it for decades.

The main goal of the ecological education activities of the zapovednik is to explain to general public the overall idea of ecosystem preservation, to educate people about the aims of the zapovednik system and its history, its diverse locations and the research programs.
We work with both specific groups and general visitors.
School kids are an important and challenging target group. The majority of environmental education programs and activities of the “Denezhkin Kamen” zapovednik are aimed at school children of different education levels. The zapovednik education programs do not duplicate what is covered in schools, on the contrary they provide new information, and help kids develop skills, behaviors and attitudes to make them better stewarts of the land they live on.

Another focus group is represented by schools teachers (including elementary schools and kindergartens). The zapovednik specialists provide information such as digital presentations, slides, and quiz questions for their use in biology and geography lessons.
There is a special category of publik we work with, the Cossacks. In our area the Cossacks represent a voluntary team of young people and children, interested in Russian history, traditions and military training. They are highly motivated to know the land better and to protect not only its people but its natural resources as well. A major focus of our educational program is public relations and information dissemination.
The “Denezhkin Kamen” zapovednik issues a monthly bulletin and managers a web site and a blog.
